Final
Kings blank Canucks
Jan 14, 2014 - 7:53 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jonathan Quick stopped 28 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season as the Los Angeles Kings took a 1-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Monday.Dustin Brown scored the only goal of the game early in the third period for the Kings, who have won two of their last three.
"They're a tough team and we've developed a bit of a rivalry over the past few years after playing them in the playoffs a few times. So that's what you expect when they come in here and when we go out there," Quick said.
Eddie Lack stopped 19 shots in the hard-luck loss for the Canucks, who have dropped six of their last seven.
"We get squat for points, but I think we crossed a couple of bridges in what needs to be done," Vancouver head coach John Tortorella said.
Brown scored his goal 24 seconds into the final frame off a rush play as him and Anze Kopitar worked the puck back and forth until Kopitar was in a position to get a shot off.
Holding the puck in the slot, Kopitar switched to the backhand and lost the puck, but it went to the right side and Brown was able to backhand it in for his 10th of the season.
The Kings nearly added to their lead midway through the frame on the power play as Mike Richards deflected a Justin Williams shot past Lack. It was called a goal on the ice, but a replay showed the Richards' stick was above the crossbar, and the goal was waived off.
Quick, though, made the lead stand up as he stopped 11 shots in the final frame to preserve his 27th career shutout.
Los Angeles had a full seven minutes of power play awarded to the team early in the first period as Tom Sestito was given a major for fighting along with instigating after jumping Jordan Nolan, but was unable to get any on the board.
Lack stopped 12 shots through the first two periods, while Quick made 17 to keep the game scoreless.
