Powell, Ghitelman & Schuss grab week 11 honors in MLL

Jul 22, 2013 - 8:12 PM Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced the weekly award winners for Week 11 of the 2013 season, which concluded on July 21. The winners are chosen every week by the League, and are based on outstanding in-game achievements. Chesapeake's Casey Powell earned Warrior Offensive Player of the Week in his first appearance of the season, while Charlotte's Adam Ghitelman collected Warrior Defensive Player of the Week. Ohio's Logan Schuss picked up Cascade Rookie of the Week.

Powell led the Bayhawks to a 13-12 victory over the Boston Cannons, earning Chesapeake its first overtime win in four tries this season. The long-time veteran competed in his first game of the year, and first since June of 2012. Number 22 wasted no time reinserting himself into the picture, earning Player of the Game accolades after a four point performance, including a diving goal at the end of regulation to send the Bayhawks into overtime. Powell rifled in two other goals, and threw a handful of behind-the-back passes, connecting with Ben Rubeor for a tally early in the fourth quarter. The attackman's 403 career points is second in the MLL's record books, runner-up to only Boston's Ryan Boyle. Chesapeake next travels to Denver to face the undefeated Outlaws this Saturday, July 27, at 2:00 p.m. (ET). ESPN2 will broadcast the game live.

Ghitelman helped steer the Charlotte Hounds to a 13-11 win over the New York Lizards, keeping the Hounds in a fight for a playoff position. The three-year professional ended the game with 12 saves, and five groundballs, while limiting the Lizards to only five goals in the first three quarters of play. The goalie provided quick outlet passes, allowing the Hounds to capitalize on multiple transition goals, highlighted by four points from long-pole defenders. Ghitelman and the Hounds will next play the Ohio Machine this Saturday, July 27, at 7:00 p.m. (ET). Fans can see the game live on ESPN3.

Despite a 13-12 loss to the Hamilton Nationals, Schuss supplied three goals, and one helper in the match-up. The lefty midfielder has helped lead this young Ohio team to a competitive second half of the season, as the Machine have dropped their past two outings by one point each. The Ohio State University graduate is leading his team in goals [20], and is second in total points [23] thus far. In only eight games, the rookie has cracked the MLL Top 25 for this season's scoring leaders. Schuss and the Machine will host the Charlotte Hounds this Saturday, July 27. ESPN3 will broadcast the game live at 7:00 p.m. (ET).
